As a tech-savvy educator, I am conscious to not rely on technology so much in the classroom. Instead, I am striving to combine active learning strategies with technology. During my teaching assistant duties in my PhD, I have used a variety of student-centric teaching strategies and instructional techniques, such as the following:

  • I became (a rotating) team-member among the students, instead of being their ‘superior’, giving to the students the impression that we are equal. This helps them boost their confidence to speak up their mind and talk freely.
  • I used polling survey responses from students in real-time, which helps students take control of the class, creating engagement and boosting exploration.
  • I randomised the results from assignments to their peers and asked them to provide anonymous feedback to each other, making both assignments and feedback anonymous, enhancing imagination and curiosity.
  • I asked students to go out in the city and discover the most awful, worst examples of design they could think of. Once they presented terrible examples, I twisted them. They had to pretend and imagine that it was work produced by someone at their design studio, and they had to defend it to a hypothetical client.  This exercise helps students to grow their critical thinking and integrating a dichotomous mind and being playful too.

Teaching and committing time at the university has been one of my scholarship duties in my PhD studies. Teaching has been an excellent experience for me. I have been mentoring and supervising students directly and also because I get to work and assist the faculty. I have been applying my professional knowledge and skills to teach and helping the course instructor to conduct the class. I provide dedicated, encouraging feedback to those students who needed additional support and a tap in the back. I performed several duties, such as

  1. Supervising, mentoring, and follow up on the progress of individual students.
  2. Organising resources and helping with tools and techniques.
  3. Assisting students to familiarise with design methodologies.
  4. Orienting and looking after undergraduate international and exchange students
  5. Only the course instructors were permitted to grade students. Nonetheless, I had to explain to students about the grading procedures, how rubrics work and help them understand why they received the grade that they did, and how to reflect on their performance.

Design students learn by doing. My goal as an educator is to create engaging learning experiences that embrace diversity, aiming to create a collaborative and inclusive atmosphere. At the same time, I am committed to the personal growth of each student, and I do advocate independent learning through critical reflection. When we talk about scaffolding, I think it all starts with determining the learning goals and making the success criteria clear and transparent to students. Further on, I also aim to provide students with the support, assistance, and encouragement they need, and of course, I am very eager to challenge and carefully provoke them, to enable their mental growth and development.

My teaching philosophy is deeply rooted in my Greek culture. It means considerable debate and philosophical discussions about what it means to be a citizen and the role in society. I believe that design education is based on these foundation principles of discussions, debates, and critical reflections. Through these, we can learn and improve our designs. I believe a student’s personal and professional development is based on the invaluable discovery through discussion, facilitated through a well-coordinated conversation about their work and experiences. We, the teachers, I think we are responsible for creating those experiences, and we are also having a responsibility to society, as in a way, we (designers) give form and shape to the world. A high degree of ethics as a design teacher is vital. Design education does not exist in a vacuum, which means being aware of social, environmental, political and other global issues.[/ohio_text][vc_empty_space height=”25px” el_class=”clb__section_spacer”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”6/12″][vc_empty_space height=”25px” el_class=”clb__section_spacer”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” use_through_lines=”1″ css=”.vc_custom_1577175169422{background-color: rgba(136,136,136,0.05) !important;*background-color: rgb(136,136,136) !important;}” side_background_title_typo=”null”][vc_column width=”6/12″][vc_empty_space height=”25px” el_class=”clb__section_spacer”][ohio_heading subtitle_type_layout=”top_subtitle” module_type_layout=”on_left” heading_type=”h2″ divider_visible=”1″ title=”R3Vlc3QlMjBMZWN0dXJlcyUyQyUyMHNlbWluYXJzJTJDJTIwdGFsa3MlMjBhbmQlMjBwcmVzZW50YXRpb25zJTIw” title_typo=”{“font_size“:““,“line_height“:““,“letter_spacing“:““,“color“:““,“weight“:“inherit“,“style“:“inherit“,“use_custom_font“:false}” css_class=”clb__heading” subtitle=”JUYwJTlGJTkyJUFD” subtitle_typo=”{“font_size“:““,“line_height“:““,“letter_spacing“:““,“color“:““,“weight“:“inherit“,“style“:“uppercase“,“use_custom_font“:false}”][ohio_text text_typo=”null”]
